Bewilderment

Have you ever had a song stuck in your head but you can't remember who sings it or maybe where you heard it? You can't quite remember the tune or the correct lyrics so it's more like a mumbling in your head? Total bewilderment.

I've had something like this for about four years. Here's what happened:

In my senior year of high school, at the final Madrigal concert, we played "Pass the Mic," where each person takes a turn singing a solo, about 30 seconds worth, and passes the microphone to someone else. You can sing anything you want and there's no assigned order but everyone has to take a turn.

I have a pretty bad memory so I was nervous I might freeze up and have nothing to sing. So I chose my song ahead of time and repeated the opening line over and over in my head. Then when the mic was passed to me, I REMEMBERED! Yay, but I started pretty high, after all, I don't have perfect pitch, and by the climax of the song, I was HIGH! But, as I like to say, I rocked it. I was on pitch and clear and best of all, I really enjoyed it. This song was stuck in my all the time that year.

Well since then, I'd forgotten what it was that I sang but remembered the thrill of singing it. I kept thinking "It was something by Celine Dion, right? What was it? Was it something about 'she...' something something?" For four years I've been trying to remember what the heck I sang! I started asking people who were at the concert if they remembered. Nothing. My friend Gwen recorded all the concerts that year (and probably still) so I called her to help me look up the video. Well, a few months later, she called me and played it for me. I still had no idea. It was all garbley . "I think you said 'runaway' or something." Ding, lightbulb. Finally, after all this time, I know what it is! I sang "I don't wanna run away" by Daniel Beddingfield. Now I can forget again.
